About Music Notes:

That’s what I came to do.

I was prepared to do just that until I walked into my audition and saw him. Tall, mysterious, and gorgeous to boot, he was sitting at the coaches’ table with three others, ready to judge my performance, and decide my future. Yet, since I’d walked onto the stage, he continued to look at anything but me. So, I did the one thing I was there to do: sing. When I opened my mouth and let those words spill from my lips, he finally looked up. Those startling, dark eyes collided with mine with such intensity that I knew one thing for certain: I would never be the same.

I am Layne Carter, newest contestant on Rising Star, the biggest singing competition on reality television. Nothing can stop me from giving this show my all. Not my horrible diva roommate. Not the fact that I'm terribly homesick and miss my family. And certainly not my uncontrollable growing attraction to my coach, Beau Tanner, award winning country superstar. Nothing will stand in my way.

And I’m wrong.

Inspiration of Music Notes

A few years ago, I saw a preview for an upcoming season of The Voice. Maroon 5 is definitely one of my fave bands, and has been since their 90’s debut album “Songs About Jane,” but I never really stopped and considered the true hotness that IS Adam Levine until he stuck his tongue out (directed at me, I’m sure) during that promo for the show. So, I made note to watch it when the new season rolled around.

I wasn’t really a fan of singing shows like American Idol, preferring the likes of Survivor and The Amazing Race. And if you promise not to make fun of me, what really grabbed my attention back before I forfeited my television privileges for children’s cartoons was Real World/Road Rules Challenges on MTV.

Anyway…that season on The Voice, I fell head over heels in singing voice envy with contestant Amber Carrington. As soon as I heard her sing, I knew she was the one I was rooting for. Of course, being that Adam chose her for his team made it all that much sweeter.

So, I watched. And I voted. I was pulled into the competition, eager to see what songs they would sing next, what witty banter the judges would partake in that week, what words of wisdom these people–coaches and contestants–would bestow upon each other. They were friends inside the studios and out, and I was hooked.

And that got me thinking…

What if the contestant lusted after the coach? What if the coach wanted the contestant? Lord knows if I were Amber Carrington, I would have climbed Adam Levine like a tree! But what if a relationship was completely forbidden, yet couldn’t be denied?

And Music Notes was born.

I had to change up my hero a bit. I needed there to be a musical difference between him and the heroine, and lord knows I can’t turn down a hot cowboy with a smoldering look. (Note: My husband is not a cowboy. Hmm…) So, my muse transformed into a country superstar. I also have a soft spot for single heroines (or heroes) with kids, and since I needed a reason for Layne to set aside her musical aspirations, Eli was born.

This book was a process. It was taxing and frustrating like no other that I’ve written. It took me almost a year to write. Why? Because the freaking heroine rewrote the ending. I had it all planned out, and she went and did what she wasn’t supposed to do. And when the book was complete, it left me a little unsettled. So, I set it aside and revisited it after a few months, only to realize I wanted the original ending.

But what if I didn’t throw the “other” ending in the trash…

And you have Music Notes. I couldn’t be happier with the way this idea, this Adam Levine inspired daydream, turned out.
