The Story behind the Story- Danger by Dalliance

Close to the end of Rescue by Ruin the heroine Beatrice experiences a heartbreaking betrayal at the hands of her best friend Sarah. My plan had been for Sarah to be a superficial mean girl who would not stand by her friend after Beatrice had been ruined. Sarah was going to be on the page for three lines.

Hah, best laid plans and all that.

Instead of falling in with my idea Sarah kept tugging at my arm, telling me there was more to it than met the eyes. So I asked myself my favourite question: What if?

What if Sarah had no choice but to walk away? What if for her it was a choice of her family’s survival and standing by her friend? In my Victorian London even being linked to someone who was no longer deemed socially acceptable could mean the end.

Well then, now I was intrigued. Why is Sarah dependant on the goodwill of society? What would she lose if she stood by Beatrice? Turns out that Sarah looks after her father, a brilliant inventor who cannot tie his shoelaces. He spent the money she had put aside to pay their taxes on his latest invention.

They were broke and if anyone found out, or for some reason gossiped about them, they would lose the little income her father earned as a tutor.

I think that puts Sarah in an unbearable situation: stand by her best friend, who she loved like a sister, and risk losing everything, including the ability to take care of her father.

Now I needed to figure out who she would go to for assistance and how would I move on to sexy times?

Archer and Warren walked onto the page. Archer as the confusing and fantasy-inspiring man who had the funds she required. But she couldn’t ask outright. Instead she had to find a way to ask for money while still retaining her prise. And then there is Warren, the artist, the man who is struggling without a muse and who takes one look at Sarah and needs to paint her. The man who captures Sarah’s imagination the first time she sees him and at that point she has no idea she’ll agree to sitting in the nude.

And then Things Happen!

So this is how a character who was supposed to be there for one second, turned my writing world upside down and decided she needed to be the heroine of her own story. And I love her for itJ.

About the Author:

Tina Christopher spent her early years flitting across the Channel between Germany and England. After touring the world extensively, she finally laid down roots in Toronto. And while Canada’s winters may be frigid, Tina’s characters are anything but!

Like most writers, Tina often hears voices in her head, but it took the encouragement of an editor friend before she actually put fingers to keyboard.

While those first stories will never see the light of day, she’s subsequently honed her craft and learned to build not just worlds, but entire galaxies. Her first book from Ellora’s Cave features a galaxy filled with Vampires, Humans and angel-like aliens called Naema.

When not imagining far away worlds and scorching hot encounters, Tina can be found on her sofa working through her never-ending TBR pile or venturing into the real world—whether to a nearby café or a passport-required destination. She’s a member of the RWA’s Toronto chapter. Her two degrees in environmental conservation, majoring in large animal studies, come in handy when wrestling with supernatural beasties.
